3. Metal pieces range in material from aluminum to gold, and are nice to get as a specialty set. They usually aren not carved, but rather molded, so the pieces have a smoother looking finish.

4. Plastic pieces are best used a cheap, durable set for everyday play.

5. The size of the chess pieces you should get depends on your board size. Pieces are measured by the king piece, and can be anywhere from 2 to 4 inches across.

6. When deciding on a quality chess piece, look closely at the knight. The level of detail and finish on the knight can give you a good idea on the quality, as it is usually the most intricate piece.

7. Higher quality pieces are usually weighted to add stability and prevent accidental knock over.

8. If you are a beginner, the best bet is to get a set of wood or plastic pieces for every day play. If you are advanced, or are looking for a decorative piece, marble, stone, and higher end wood pieces are a better option.
